Organic Certification

As of August 4, 2012, our farm and crops are certified organic by MOSA, the Midwest Organic Services Association.

Baking for the free community lunch today at @opentableucc with regional stone-milled grains from @meadowlark_mill_and_farm in Wisconsin and @janiesmill in Illinois. Get it at noon with one of three soups or chili, salad, and dessert. Takeout & take-home seconds are also available. Free! Y’all come!

Sourdough discard biscuits with half @meadowlark_mill_and_farm corn flour and half @janiesmill AP flour are breakfast today. These, crackers, and pancakes are my favorite ways to use extra starter. Yesterday I also tried @maurizio ‘s ciambella and chocolate chip cookies from @kingarthurbaking. What’s your favorite use for #sourdoughdiscard ?

This week’s loaf has some wild rice on it. “Real” wild rice, hand-harvested and parched by a friend of a friend in northern Minnesota, is such a precious commodity that I had to make sure it wasn’t wasted when we didn’t eat it all with dinner. Wild rice is an interesting plant, a food that is foraged but also managed by the people who forage for it. Most wild rice available in stores is actually a cultivated variety that is machine harvested. If you’re interested in indigenous foods, I recommend following some indigenous food educators, like @linda.black.elk, @rowenwhite, @siouxchef, and @vsegrest.

When I had my first kid, I thought I would just wear him around the farm while I worked. Little did I know it wouldn’t be that easy. I do still take the kids with me sometimes, but I have to be prepared and much less ambitious.

Just thinking back to the time when the only reason I ever wore a mask was for cleaning out a bin. And then for a while we saved the N-95s for healthcare workers and only wore cloth ones in the bin. Sure was glad I had a “real” mask today.

Our annual Farm Tour & Tea is cancelled for 2019 due to an extremely wet planting season (we expect that some things might not be planted by the last week in June). We hope to host a potluck party on the farm later in the season instead. As soon as we have set a date, we’ll let you know here and via social media.
